Volcanoes of the Seven Hills: Edinburgh’s Explosive Origins

17 June @ 14:00 - 17:00

Hutton’s unconformity reshaped geological understanding of deep time. Join us at the British Geological Survey (BGS) to learn more about how it fits into Edinburgh’s volcanic past.

Explore rock samples, view thin sections under the microscope, and uncover historical records revealing how the city’s Seven Hills were formed — from fiery eruptions in the Devonian to volcanic activity in the Carboniferous. Discover the explosive origins beneath your feet!

Booking is required and the tour will last 60 minutes, with an additional 15 minutes allowed for re-setting and changing to the next group.

Each tour will be a maximum of 20 people and the minimum age for attendance is 9 years old. The names of everyone attending must be provided in order to access the site.

Free, but booking required. Book here
