A unique 4+ day mosaic workshop inspired by geology – the land beneath our feet!
The workshop has been designed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the birth of the James Hutton, Father of Modern Geology, and author of Theory of the Earth.
Participants will be encouraged to develop creative designs informed by marks, colours and patterns found in stone as well as the irregular lines and striations of unconformity and intrusions illustrated in the geological prints by John Clerk of Eldin (a contemporary of Hutton).
We’ll kick start the workshop with a guided visit to the Earth Systems archive of the National Museum of Scotland, where we’ll have a chance to see some stunning rock samples in their stores and hear about the geological processes that have shaped them.
Fellow Scottish mosaicist, Dugald MacInnes, will join us to talk about his passion for geology and Scottish slate and he’ll discuss how both have informed his highly regarded mosaic artworks.
Angus Miller, local geologist and owner of Geowalks, will present an illustrated talk about the significance of Hutton’s discovery of Unconformity at the nearby (world renowned) Siccar Point. Angus is an excellent speaker and can present knotty geological information in an exciting and accessible way.
Whilst the Deep Time Mosaics workshop is inspired by geology we have designed it to be to be an exciting creative exploration suitable for all levels of experience.
Materials provided will include local stone, Australian ochre, Mexican smalti, concrete and pigments plus an assortment of other found materials. We are also encouraging participants to bring a small amount of stone local to their area to add to the creative mix.
