The Victorian Schoolroom (History of Education Centre) in Newhaven, Edinburgh is delighted to offer some lively events to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of James Hutton, the renowned, Edinburgh-born “Father of Geology”. Working together with academics from the University of Edinburgh and members of the Edinburgh Geological Society, we are offering a week of free school visits (now fully booked) culminating in a Family Day at our premises in the Heart of Newhaven, EH6 4HY.
The school lessons (running 15th to 19th June) will be Victorian-style, geology “object lessons”, based on Hutton’s discoveries at Salisbury Crags and will include a guided display of the Schoolroom’s collection of geological specimens.
The Family Day on Saturday 20th June (10.30 – 3pm) which is free and open to all, will include the same Victorian-style lessons and visit to the collection as well as geology-inspired crafting events for all ages with professional screen printers and artists. Bring along any interesting finds you have made, to (hopefully) be identified by geology PhD students. There will also be exciting refreshments available from Mwamba and the Ukranian Spiders as well as the Heart’s normal free Saturday Family Soup.
