SUMMARY:Manuscript copy of 'Theory of the Earth' on display at the Geological Society of London
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate 300 years since the birth of Scottish geologist James Hutton on 3 June 1726\, a manuscript of his groundbreaking book ‘Theory of the Earth’ (1795) will be on display in the Geological Society of London Library at Burlington House\, Piccadilly\, London. \nJames Hutton (1726–1797) was a Scottish geologist\, agriculturalist\, chemical manufacturer\, naturalist and physician. Often referred to as the “Father of Modern Geology\,” the principles described in ‘Theory of the Earth’ (1795) were fundamental to the shaping of modern geological science. \nThe Library’s document\, on display for the whole of June\, is the only known surviving geological manuscript by Hutton. Only the first two parts of ‘Theory of the Earth’ (1795) were published in his lifetime and this manuscript is a partial draft of either part 3 or 4. The Society would eventually publish it as the third volume in 1899. \nIt is written in a fair hand and was nearly ready to be sent to the printers for publication as Hutton has only annotated a few pages here and there with corrections or directions. \nHutton was known to have been working on the manuscript up until his death in 1797\, after which the manuscript passed into the hands of his friend and first biographer John Playfair (1748-1819). Playfair subsequently gave the manuscript to his friend John Webb Seymour (1777-1819) who he accompanied on a field trip to Glen Tilt in 1807 as it contained Hutton’s descriptions of his visit there in 1785\, which Seymour referenced throughout his own 1814 paper on the geology of the area. \nBoth Playfair and Seymour died in 1819 and the manuscript then passed to Seymour’s brother the Duke of Somerset\, who in turn gave it to Leonard Horner (1785-1864). \nHorner\, who was the father-in-law of Charles Lyell and a keen Huttonian\, finally gave the manuscript to the Geological Society in 1856 “to be preserved in the Library\, as an interesting document in the History of Science”. \nThe manuscript will be displayed in the Society’s Library in Burlington House\, Piccadilly\, London W1J 0BG throughout June. \nFurther information: www.geolsoc.org.uk/news/manuscript-copy-of-theory-of-the-earth-on-display-at-the-society/ \nBurlington House is open Tuesday-Thursday\, 10am-5pm – www.geolsoc.org.uk/about-us/visit-us/

SUMMARY:UNCONFORMITY. Gaps\, absences and erasures in cultural history.
DESCRIPTION:Soapbox sessions. 30 artists\, writers and performers. 10 minutes each. The Revelator in partnership with The Royal Scottish Academy. \n\n\n\n\nContributing artists include : Sam Ainsley\, Annie Cattrell\, Ilana halperin\, Gareth Fisher\, Paul Stallan\, Dave Sherry\, Louise Welsh\, Suky Best\, Kenny Hunter\, Chris Dolan\, Katie Houston\, Edward Summerton\, Shauna McMullan\, Leena Namari\, Gair Dunlop\, Joseph De Lappe\, Mary Bourne\, Joanna Kessel\, Laura Leuzzi\, Peter McCaughey\, Gordon Gibb\, Jude Barber\, Stephen Skrynka\, Ranald MacInnes\, Julie Laing\, Leila Galloway\, Rory Hamilton. \n‘Unconformity’ is a geological phenomenon revealing a missing span of millions of years between rock layers. (discovered 300 years ago by James Hutton at Siccar Point\, Berwickshire\, Scotland) This concept serves as a powerful metaphor for cultural loss: the ways in which histories can be fragmented\, obscured or deliberately erased. \nThrough a series of conversations and performances\, participants will explore these ‘missing layers’\, considering how culture is shaped not only by what remains\, but also by what has been lost. Organised by Stephen Skrynka and Annie Cattrell as a collaboration between The Revelator and The Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition celebrating 200 years. \nThe Revelator is a circular art space and wall of death\, located in Barclay Curle\, an ex shipyard. Click on the QR code on eventbrite for a clip of how to find us once you arrive (as you come through the main entrance\, we are to the left at the back of the building near the scrapyard). Please dress for outside conditions. Access : all flat ground\, if a bit bumpy. One step into the Revelator and a spiral stair to the viewing gallery at the top. The wall of death is 5m high. Inside is seated and upstairs is standing. It is a working building. You will be asked to sign a disclaimer upon entering. Entrance to this event is free but ticketed. Booking essential. The Revelator was built and is run by a group of volunteers. We are completely unfunded. Donations are welcome. \nFree event\, booking essential – book here

SUMMARY:Siccar Point Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Siccar Point on the Scottish Borders coast is one of the most significant locations in the history of geology. It was here in 1788 that James Hutton predicted\, and then found\, an unconformity – a geological feature that represents a significant gap in the geological record\, and shows how the Earth’s surface is continually recycled and regenerated by natural processes. \nTo celebrate the Tercentenary of James Hutton’s birth\, the Edinburgh Geological Society and partners are creating a new Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point. The trail will lead visitors along the 1.3 km route from the nearest road to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. Along the way\, Hutton’s story gradually unfolds. \nJoin geologists from the Edinburgh Geological Society at Siccar Point to explore the new Deep Time Trail and find out more about James Hutton and this famous location. \nFree – Drop in between 11 am and 4pm each day – no booking required \nAmateur radio operator Paul Temple will be operating from a temporary Special Event Station at Siccar Point using the call sign GB9GEO\, as part of the Parks on the Air programme\, which encourages radio operators to set up temporary stations in designated parks\, enjoying the harmony of nature while making contacts with other radio enthusiasts. Paul will be operational from around 11:00am and will operate as long the batteries last and conditions permit. \n\n An event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.

SUMMARY:Royal Scottish Academy: Geology Walk
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by In Time\, Annie Cattrell RSA’s curated element of the 200th Annual Exhibition\, we invite you to join a walking tour led by local geologist Dr Angus Miller. Starting at the Royal Scottish Academy\, we will reflect on the dynamic geology around our building at the Mound\, Princes Street Gardens and the Old Town as we follow James Hutton’s footsteps on a journey through time. Each walk will be approximately 90 minutes in duration. \nIn-Time \nThis significant year for the RSA also marks the tricentenary of the birth of James Hutton (1726–1797)\, the ‘father of modern geology’. Reflecting on our philosophical and physical foundations (with the building constructed beside ancient volcanic rock)\, Cattrell’s curation will explore the RSA’s rich and layered development over time. She has invited artists interested in ideas of geology and the passage of time\, including Martin Creed\, James Geurts\, Cathie Pilkington and Stephen Skrynka\, to take part in the exhibition. Sam Ainsley RSA has also been invited to design the external banners. \nSaturday 23 May and Monday 8 June\, 10am and 1pm \nFurther information & Booking

SUMMARY:Edinburgh film premiere: As Old As The Hills
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Edinburgh premiere screening of the film As Old As The Hills – made for the Orkney Science Festival. The film is timely – the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the birth of James Hutton\, the father of modern geology\, start in June. \nSlovenian filmmaker\, Selena S. Kuzman\, takes us on an epic scenic journey through Caithness and Orkney\, with magnificent drone footage. Along the way\, presenters Mara Gibb and Katy Firth use quirky timelines and models to help the viewer to grasp the immensity of Deep Time. As Old As has been described as the ultimate slow movie. \nEdinburgh geomorphologist\, Adrian Hall\, wrote the script. We find that rock hills have half-lives of tens or even hundreds of millions of years. But soft hills\, like sand dunes and glacial drumlins\, appear and disappear over thousands of years. Watch out for the final Da Vinci code twist supplied by renowned Orkney storyteller\, Tom Muir. \nSelena Kuzman and Adrian Hall will be available after the showing for a Q&A session about the making of the film. \nVENUE: Lecture Theatre G01 – Lister Learning and Teaching Centre\, 5 Roxburgh Place\, Edinburgh\, EH8 9SU \nFREE\, booking essential: book here

SUMMARY:Collective: Panorama Research Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon with artist Amanda Thomson as she reflects on her microresidency as part of Collective’s 2025 Panorama programme. The residency invited Thomson to respond to the world’s first panorama (1788)\, created by Robert Barker on Calton Hill. \nThomson’s research explored how Baker’s panorama explicitly and intrinsically captured the different layers of Edinburgh: its geology and geography as well as its built environment. Thomson comments that: \n“There is both a timelessness and a restlessness to the city\, where the deep time status of Arthur’s Seat overlooks the castle with its origins in the 11th century\, the medieval High Street and Holyrood Palace\, the Old and New Towns. From where we are now\, we can see the urbanisation and ‘filling in’ of the fields and countryside that were so present in Barker’s panorama. While it’s easy to look into the distance\, I’m interested in the nearer too\, the flora and fauna that inhabit the hill itself\, and how easy it is to overlook what’s immediately before us.” \nThomson will present on her different strategies to explore the city and its surrounding areas from different perspectives; the near and the far\, past to present. Using newer technologies (e.g. trail cameras) and older ways of looking (archives/ historical documents) to consider responses to Barker’s original panorama. \nThomson has also invited geologist and writer Alan McKirdy to present on the geology of Edinburgh and James Hutton’s lost drawings\, an avenue of research that Thomson found particularly intriguing. \nBook now: www.collective-edinburgh.art/programme/amanda-thomson

SUMMARY:Ilana Halperin: What is Us and What is Earth
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of sculpture\, drawing and photography from Glasgow based artist Ilana Halperin\, whose art seeks to make geological time human; to map the incomprehensible vastness of geological time and the natural world through the knowable familiarity of human experience. \nThe earliest work in this exhibition\, Boiling Milk Solfataras (1999)\, shows the artist heating milk in a small saucepan in a hot sulphur spring in Iceland. Halperin has described the work as like ‘waiting for all the layers of geological time and activity to make their way up to the surface to the point where it’s humanly viable to connect with it. With as little mediation as possible’. Four years after making it\, as she turned 30\, Halperin realised that she was born the same year as the Eldfell volcano off the coast of Iceland. Mapping the timeline of her life onto that of the volcano\, she has celebrated her 30th\, 40th\, 50th and 51st birthdays alongside it\, developing a considerable body of work. This exhibition brings much of that work together\, including watercolours\, drawings\, text and small sculptures made with material gifted to Halperin by the volcano: crystals\, a pair of agates and a lava bomb. \nSharing your birthday with a volcano is a way to speed up deep time\, and several of Halperin’s sculptural series do that too. Boiling milk on the surface of geothermally rich waters led her to investigate ‘fast geology’ further\, and to a collaboration to ‘grow’ sculptures with the calcifying springs of Fontaines Pétrifiantes de Saint-Nectaire in France. The exhibition includes the earliest cave casts Halperin made with the springs\, and a new rock cycle\, with Scottish fossils and marble\, and Herkimer quartz crystals from New York telling an age-old\, brand new ‘diamond story’. \nwww.fruitmarket.co.uk/event/ilana-halperin/ \n
