SUMMARY:Exhibition: Earth Matters
DESCRIPTION:Earth Matters marks the tercentenary of the birth of the Edinburgh-born geologist\, writer and farmer\, James Hutton (1726-1797). Often described as the ‘father of modern geology’\, Hutton is known for his ground-breaking theories into the Earth’s creation and his exploration of rock formation. Hutton also gave much attention to the earth beneath our feet – soil. \nEarth Matters is inspired by Hutton and subsequent trailblazers who have helped challenge and change our understanding of soil. Earth Matters will explore Hutton’s writings on soil and include the rarely exhibited ‘Lost Drawings’ by his contemporary\, the artist and writer John Clerk of Eldin. Through art\, craft and design dating from the 18th century to the present-day\, Earth Matters will illuminate the vital beauty and brilliance of earth. \nPresented by Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in partnership with Design Exhibition Scotland~\nInverleith House\, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh\nFriday 20 March – Sunday 1 November\, 10:30am – 4:30pm\nDrop in – Free

SUMMARY:Exhibition: James Hutton and Glen Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Explore this new exhibition at Blair Castle that celebrates the tri centenary of the enlightenment polymath Dr James Hutton and his discoveries within Glen Tilt\, Atholl Estates. \n\n\n\nThe sculptor Jake Harvey and artist Helen Douglas were commissioned by Blair Charitable Trust to create sculptures and printed works using Glen Tilt\, which runs for several miles Northerly from Blair Atholl\, and the discoveries of the geologist James Hutton in that glen as their inspiration. Their works alongside various artefacts relating to James Hutton’s visit to the glen in 1785 are on display in the Banvie Hall within Blair Castle. The exhibition runs until 30th October. \n\n\nThe exhibition is part of a nation wide celebration of the tercentenary of James Hutton (1726-1797)\, the polymath and founder of modern geology. It is in the glen running into Blair Castle that Hutton made one of his great discoveries unlocking the theory of deep time. This is the inspiration behind the artists’ work and we hope their beautiful work brings Hutton’s discovery to life. \n\nExhibition location: Inside the Banvie Hall at Blair Castle\, located towards the northern end of the castle\, through the glass entrance doors. \nExhibition admission: Included with a Castle or a Gardens & Grounds ticket. \nIf you have a Gardens & Grounds ticket\, please enter via the Banvie Hall entrance. Castle ticket holders will exit their tour through the Banvie Hall where they can view the exhibition. \nAccessibility information: This exhibition is fully accessible to all via the Banvie Hall entrance. Wheelchair accessible toilets are available inside the Banvie Hall. \nMore information and tickets – atholl-estates.co.uk/blair-castle/exhibitions/james-hutton-and-glen-tilt/

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Rain
DESCRIPTION:When people think of Scotland\, they often think of rain. Scots\, in turn\, have always had a lot to say about it! Our relationship with rain is both practical and deeply woven into our culture\, landscape and national identity. \nThis exhibition makes a splash as we dive into Scotland’s relationship with rain. From weather forecasting\, fashion\, and film\, to rain-soaked love stories\, climate emergencies\, and everything in between. \nIncluded in the exhibition is James Hutton’s ‘Theory of Rain’\, published in ‘Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’ (1788).

SUMMARY:Curious Minds: James Hutton and the Scottish Enlightenment
DESCRIPTION:The founder of modern geology was a Scot\, from Edinburgh. James Hutton revolutionised geology with his meticulous observations\, measurements and deductions about the Earth and its age. He was also much more than this. He was a farmer\, an entrepreneur and a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. 2026 marks the 300th anniversary of his birth. Alan McKirdy will tell us about his fascinating life and discoveries as well as the unique role played by Scotland in the emergence of the science of geology. \nFurther information & tickets
