DESCRIPTION:Unconformities is a new exhibition of geological and mathematical textile art by Madeleine Shepherd. Expect aperiodic tiles\, computational kimonos and a celebration of James Hutton’s 300th birthday. Hutton was born in Edinburgh in 1726. Considered the father of modern geology\, he was also an agriculturalist\, chemical manufacturer\, naturalist and physician. \nMadeleine has knitted Hutton’s portrait in naturally dyed yarns\, referencing his studies in the production of madder root for dyeing wool. DESCRIPTION:BBC Radio 4 – 19:15 Sunday 9th August – programme web page \n \nFor Radio 4’s Illuminated strand – the home of creative documentary making – award winning musician and writer Karine Polwart celebrates the tercentenary of James Hutton\, the 18th century Scottish scientist\, philosopher and farmer known as the Father of Geology. \nWith specially performed music\, song and spoken word – in collaboration with pianist Dave Milligan and sound designer Pippa Murphy – Polwart explores one of Hutton’s most radical concepts: Deep Time. \nHutton’s hypothesis that the formation of the earth had taken unfathomably longer than contemporary Biblical understandings was bound up with his hands on experience of earth processes as an innovative farmer. When he and two companions stepped ashore from a boat trip to Siccar Point\, a rugged promontory in the Scottish Borders in June 1788\, what Hutton saw was horizontal layers of Old Red Sandstone overlaying tilted\, vertical ribs of dark greywacke\, laid down some 60 million years earlier. The immense gap in time between these rock types\, a breach in the continuous geological record\, is what geologists today call an unconformity. And it is evidence\, as Hutton had theorised\, of unfathomably long\, slow processes of geologic change. \nRecreating Hutton’s Siccar Point boat journey on foot for the programme\, Karine is joined by geologist Dr Angus Miller\, writer and Professor of Literature and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh\, David Farrier and artist Ilana Halperin. \nAngus explains the geological processes at play\, offers insight into Hutton’s character and tells us also how Hutton’s theory was popularised after his death through the words of his boat trip companion\, John Playfair: “The mind seemed to grow giddy by looking so far into the abyss of time”. \nFor David Farrier\, Hutton’s discoveries illuminate not only the deep past but pose ethical questions about the future. He wonders how our urban\, industrial and technological debris might eventually manifest in rock strata\, what our future ancestors might make of us and what responsibilities we have to generations as yet unborn. \nIlana Halperin shares a birthday with Iceland’s Eldfell volcano\, which she visits at significant milestones throughout their lives. DESCRIPTION:Co-tutored by Joanna Kessel & Helen Bodycomb\n17-21 July 2026\nEdinburgh\, Scotland\n10 places (open to all levels) \nA unique 4+ day mosaic workshop inspired by geology – the land beneath our feet! \nThe workshop has been designed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the birth of the James Hutton\, Father of Modern Geology\, and author of Theory of the Earth. \nParticipants will be encouraged to develop creative designs informed by marks\, colours and patterns found in stone as well as the irregular lines and striations of unconformity and intrusions illustrated in the geological prints by John Clerk of Eldin (a contemporary of Hutton). \nWe’ll kick start the workshop with a guided visit to the Earth Systems archive of the National Museum of Scotland\, where we’ll have a chance to see some stunning rock samples in their stores and hear about the geological processes that have shaped them. \nFellow Scottish mosaicist\, Dugald MacInnes\, will join us to talk about his passion for geology and Scottish slate and he’ll discuss how both have informed his highly regarded mosaic artworks. \nAngus Miller\, local geologist and owner of Geowalks\, will present an illustrated talk about the significance of Hutton’s discovery of Unconformity at the nearby (world renowned) Siccar Point. Angus is an excellent speaker and can present knotty geological information in an exciting and accessible way. \nWhilst the Deep Time Mosaics workshop is inspired by geology we have designed it to be to be an exciting creative exploration suitable for all levels of experience. \nMaterials provided will include local stone\, Australian ochre\, Mexican smalti\, concrete and pigments plus an assortment of other found materials. DESCRIPTION:The Victorian Schoolroom (History of Education Centre) in Newhaven\, Edinburgh is delighted to offer some lively events to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of James Hutton\, the renowned\, Edinburgh-born “Father of Geology”. Working together with academics from the University of Edinburgh and members of the Edinburgh Geological Society\, we are offering a week of free school visits (now fully booked) culminating in a Family Day at our premises in the Heart of Newhaven\, EH6 4HY. \nThe school lessons (running 15th to 19th June) will be Victorian-style\, geology “object lessons”\, based on Hutton’s discoveries at Salisbury Crags and will include a guided display of the Schoolroom’s collection of geological specimens. \nThe Family Day on Saturday 20th June (10.30 – 3pm) which is free and open to all\, will include the same Victorian-style lessons and visit to the collection as well as geology-inspired crafting events for all ages with professional screen printers and artists. Bring along any interesting finds you have made\, to (hopefully) be identified by geology PhD students. This will be on Saturday\, 20 June\, starting at 10.00 from the Portuguese Cannon. \nEntitled ‘The view from Calton Hill: James Hutton’s Edinburgh’\, Angus will take us around the summit of Calton Hill\, reflecting on the role of this landscape in influencing the ideas of Hutton and his friend John Clerk of Eldin. \nAngus Miller writes: “On his death in 1797\, Hutton left an unpublished volume of the Theory of the Earth\, to be illustrated by beautiful\, detailed geological drawings by John Clerk\, including several of Edinburgh. DESCRIPTION:Hutton’s Birthday celebrations at Leiden University \nOn 14 June 2026\, it will be exactly three centuries since James Hutton was born. Widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the history of the earth sciences\, Hutton is celebrated as a founding figure of modern geology. Less widely known—but of special importance to Leiden—is that he completed part of his studies at Leiden University\, earning his doctorate there in 1749. \nIn his groundbreaking book Theory of the Earth (1795)\, Hutton presented the Earth as a dynamic and continuously evolving system. Through his research in Scotland\, he demonstrated that processes such as erosion\, sedimentation\, and volcanism not only shape the world as we know it today but have been operating over millions of years. In doing so\, he fundamentally challenged the prevailing biblical view that the Earth was only a few thousand years old. \nWith his principle of uniformitarianism—the insight that natural processes have operated in the same way throughout geological time—Hutton introduced the revolutionary concept of “deep time”.  He argued that the Earth is unimaginably ancient and shaped by slow\, continuous forces. This idea laid the groundwork for modern geological and evolutionary thought. \nThe Leiden Geological Society proudly highlights that this visionary scientist received part of his academic training in Leiden. His doctorate in 1749 marked a pivotal moment in a life that would ultimately transform our understanding of the planet. \nOn Sunday\, 14 June 2026\, Leiden will commemorate Hutton\, reaffirming its historic role in advancing earth sciences.  This celebration recognises an alumnus whose ideas continue to shape research and education worldwide. \nThe celebration begins at 14:00 (2 pm) in Leiden’s Van der Werfpark. Accompanied by the Red Rose of Lochbuie Pipes and Drums\, participants will take a short walk to Hutton’s former residence at Langebrug 101 for a tribute. The event will conclude with a festive gathering back in the Van der Werfpark. \nEveryone is welcome to this public celebration – feel free to bring family and friends. This makes Arran a very special place to appreciate how field visits helped support and develop Hutton’s ideas on how the Earth works. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by In Time\, Annie Cattrell RSA’s curated element of the 200th Annual Exhibition\, we invite you to join a walking tour led by local geologist Dr Angus Miller. Starting at the Royal Scottish Academy\, we will reflect on the dynamic geology around our building at the Mound\, Princes Street Gardens and the Old Town as we follow James Hutton’s footsteps on a journey through time. Each walk will be approximately 90 minutes in duration. \nIn-Time \nThis significant year for the RSA also marks the tricentenary of the birth of James Hutton (1726–1797)\, the ‘father of modern geology’. Reflecting on our philosophical and physical foundations (with the building constructed beside ancient volcanic rock)\, Cattrell’s curation will explore the RSA’s rich and layered development over time. She has invited artists interested in ideas of geology and the passage of time\, including Martin Creed\, James Geurts\, Cathie Pilkington and Stephen Skrynka\, to take part in the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park\, and to celebrate the 300th Birthday of James Hutton\, the father of modern geology\, in the place where many of his crucial observations were made! \nLearn about the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions and glacial erosion. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. \nVisit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing high-vis jackets and blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. There will also be family activities in the Education Centre! \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions.
